This weekend I took a que from some of the more inventive photogs I follow and decided to setup a simple home studio. In the garage of course.
I have seen many a DIY projects for making light modifiers and flash bounce accessories... but this video by Bert Stephani really got me excited. What's better than a softbox?... a gigantic softbox!
Here are some shots of my quick project. I already owned a couple of 500 watt work lights with stands. Those were only about $30.00 at Lowes. Then Quinn suggested I use the rafters in the garage to hang the backgrounds with clamps. This provides limitless possibilities for maneuvering the backdrops. By the way, the backdrop is just a "designer" cloth shower curtain cover. The soft box pictured is the same dow rod/clamp assembly as the backdrop - but it holds a frosted plastic shower curtain as the softbox and really does provide a great soft light. The rim light is just some shiny craft paper glued to a foam board from the craft store. All told - minus actual camera gear - what you see is about $100.00 with the work lights included.
